The Rise of Free Ad-Supported TV in the UK
Juggling five or six monthly streaming subscriptions gets expensive fast. So, it’s no surprise millions of UK households are ditching extra fees for free ad-supported platforms instead. Often called FAST channels UK audiences can tap into right away, these platforms serve up continuous live channels and entire box sets—no bank details needed.
Forget about messing around with an aerial on the roof; a decent Wi-Fi connection and a Smart TV or streaming stick are all you need. The real question is, with dozens of preloaded apps cluttering up your screen, which ones are actually worth your time?
Pluto TV: Best for Niche Shows and Bingeable Classics
Backed by Paramount, Pluto TV packs a massive library. It feels old-school in the best way, using a standard TV grid where channels broadcast continuous, single-show streams 24/7.
If you’re in the mood to binge vintage sci-fi, retro 90s sitcoms, or endless true crime docs, Pluto has dedicated channels playing them around the clock. Channel-hopping here takes you right back to late-night cable browsing. It loads fast enough, though navigating the menu gets a little laggy on older streaming sticks.
Picture quality stays sharp in HD. Expect ad breaks every 8 to 12 minutes or so, but thankfully, they’re noticeably shorter than standard TV ad runs.
Amazon Freevee: Strongest On-Demand and Originals
When Amazon turned IMDb TV into Freevee, they threw serious money behind it. Rather than forcing you into a live TV grid like Pluto, Freevee behaves just like Prime Video, letting you pick through a huge catalog of movies and series whenever you want.
They even fund high-budget originals—think hit comedies like Jury Duty alongside the resurrected soap staple Neighbours. You’ll also find a handful of curated live streams if you prefer passive viewing.
Since it builds directly into the main Prime Video app on most devices, jumping back and forth from paid rentals to free shows is effortless. The video quality is top-tier, and you won’t get bombarded with anywhere near as many ads as regular broadcast telly.
Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels: Pre-installed Built-in Options
Picked up a modern Samsung or LG telly lately? You’ve already got these installed. They blend web-streamed channels directly alongside your normal broadcast guide, so there’s zero setup required.
Samsung TV Plus comes packed with over 100 UK channels—everything from live news and sports recaps to music videos and trashy reality TV. LG Channels works much the same way, drawing on Xumo’s backend tech to keep streams running seamlessly.
Pure convenience is the selling point here. Hit ‘channel up’ on your remote and something starts playing right away, no sign-ups or accounts needed. For a complete walkthrough on setting up internet-delivered channels, take a look at our Freeview IPTV UK guide.
Comparing Content, User Experience, and Picture Quality
Here is how they perform when you run them side by side:
- Content Variety: Freevee easily takes the crown for on-demand movies and big-budget series, while Pluto is unbeatable if you just want to flip channels until something catches your eye.
- Interface: Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels win on pure ease of use—they’re baked right into the native TV guide.
- Ad Experience: Freevee gives you fewer commercial breaks per hour than Pluto TV.
- Device Support: You can throw Pluto TV or Freevee onto practically any phone or streaming stick. Samsung TV Plus and LG Channels are mostly locked to their own TV hardware, though Samsung does offer a scaled-back mobile app now.
Which Free Service Should You Choose?
Honestly? You don’t have to choose. They don’t cost a penny, so keeping them all around makes the most sense.
That said, if you’re looking for decent movies and full TV box sets without endless ads, start with Amazon Freevee. It genuinely feels like a paid streaming app that happens to be free.
If you just want background noise while WFH or fancy mindless channel hopping, Pluto TV or your TV’s built-in FAST channels UK guide will do the job nicely. Give Freevee a spin tonight—you might find you can drop a paid sub or two right away.
